How to choose the right AC drive?

Choosing a variable frequency converter is an important step in projecting a variable speed drive system. If the chosen device is too small, it won‘t be capable of optimally operating the connected motor. If it is too big, there is a chance that the motor won‘t be properly managed and the project will cost more than necessary. A frequently used method for choosing a drive is rated engine power. Even though manufacturers indicate the drive‘s power ranges, this data usually are related to standard 4-pole motors. Because currents of the same power motors may be very different, depending on the motor’s construction or the number of poles. That is why this method is suitable for only an approximate selection of variable frequency converters.

The main points to consider before choosing a frequency converter:

  • Motor specifications (power, current, motor construction, etc.)
  • Overload capacity
  • Operation ranges
  • Motor wires (will they be used, what length, what material, etc.)
  • Environment (ambient temperature, altitude, etc.)
  • Centralized or decentralized installation.
